I’ve been a console gamer ever since I first encountered my friends Sega Megadrive, although it wasn’t until my dad got me and my sister a PS1 that I truly got into gaming!
Some of my friends are gamers and some are not, and a comment I often hear from the “non-gamers” after a conversation involving spending several hours on a game is “oh what a waste of time”. Now maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always found this to be a slightly odd comment as while it is almost certainly a few hours spent being unproductive, I never hear the same comment uttered about people who have spent a few hours watching a film or reading a story book, although both these activities seem to share an equal level of unproductiveness in my mind.
I can only assume that it is ignorance on those peoples parts, as I would suspect that everyone has watched an entire film during their lives and read a book from cover to cover, but how many of the negative commenters have completed an entire game (or spent any decent amount of time playing one) so that they can really be in a position to pass judgement on the hours “wasted” by gamers.
I’m not trying to say that gaming is a productive use of time (far from it), but it would be nice if some people weren’t so quick to pass judgement on those who choose it as their relaxation medium of choice after a hard days work!
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to play my PS3 as I have some spare time that’s in need of “wasting”!

The yellow graph is meant to resemble pac man! The red one is not meant to be pizza though.
