My favourite games from this generation

Posted

It’s a little strange but exciting to think that, after many years of waiting and speculation, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be cropping up in living rooms all over the world. It’s a tantalising prospect but before the current generation of games starts to fade into a distant memory, I thought I’d write up a little list of my favourite games from this generation. It’s totally biased towards the consoles I own, the games I’ve managed to play and my own personal taste, so will almost certainly be different from a critics list of the best games!

My favourite video games from the current generation

  1. Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption – The only open-world game that’s managed to have a really emotionally driven story and a main character that’s got flaws but you still genuinely care about.

  2. Journey

Journey – Small. Beautiful. Totally unique and perfect! Play it!

  3. Uncharted 1, 2 and 3

Uncharted (All three, but in particular the first one) – I know most people seem to favour Drake’s second adventure as the series highpoint, but the first game really made me notice the difference in quality between the PS2 and PS3 games, and I personally liked getting to know the main characters in the first game.

  4. Machinarium

Machinarium – A rather cute point and click puzzle game with robots that I actually managed to solve without using a guide. It’s hard enough to be challanging but never impossible.

  5. Portal

Portal – A game with an insane robot baddie, who’s narcissistic, passive-aggressive, sinister, and witty. Plus, who can resist the promise of cake?

  6. Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 – I’m not normally a big fan of FPS’s, but the Borderlands series manages to combine that with a RPG loot collecting element and a slightly mental sense of humour (“Strip the flesh and salt the wound” anyone?) that’s well worth a look, or should that be CAAATCH AAAAH RIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE.

  7. Skyrim

Skyrim – I’d missed not having a good RPG to play and Final Fantasy XIII didn’t appeal to me, but Skyrim more than made up for it despite having rather a lot of bugs.

  8. Flower

Flower – Another game from the makers of Journey (ThatGameCompany), and it’s also small, beautiful and strangely relaxing.

  9. Batman Arkham Asylum

Batman Arkham Asylum – The only superhero game in a very long time that’s been any good. It’s tighly paced and has a wide range of insane baddies who help to make the story and gameplay a step above the rest.

  10. LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet (1 and 2) – Normally I find content creation in games and custom levels suck, but LittleBigPlanet managed to buck that trend by really making creation a core part of the game, and seeing some of the outstanding creations that people created with the set of tools given to them was amazing!

Games that might have made the list if I’d managed to play them

  1. The Assassins Creed series
  2. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
  3. The Last of Us
  4. Tomb Raider (the reboot, not the original)
  5. BioShock Infinite
  6. Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
  7. Portal 2
  8. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
  9. GTA V

Think I’ve missed a cracking game out? Let me know, or write up your own list and send me a link.
