Since the redesign of this site a few weeks ago, I’ve had a few comments regarding my new logo, wondering why I didn’t mention it in my previous blog post, and what the smile rollover effect signifies.
In truth, the sites logo was going to remain almost identical to the original, (Large, black and still set in the “Chunk Five” typeface) until a week before the launch.
I knew I was satisfied with the new design for the site as I started building it, but I was never 100% happy with how the logo looked, and it constantly bugged me until I decided it had to have a complete overhaul as well.
I experimented with using several script typefaces as I wanted the logo to have a curvy feel to differentiate it from the many straight lines of the site design and eventually settled on using “Bello Pro”, as it has the curves of a script but with enough weight to make it perfect for a logo.
I gave the logo a “letterpress” style inset, as it was feeling very flat as a solid colour. It was during this process that I noticed the tail of the letter “J” looked like a smiling mouth and I decided to make a feature of it.
Now a little bit of backstory is needed to fully explain this. As the logo is for Me, it made perfect sense to have a smile on it. Why? Because I have several friends who say I always seem to have such a positive attitude on things that they’ve started calling me “Mr Happy”. I’d never really considered it before then, but I realise that I’m normally happiest when I’m mucking about on my Mac trying to design something, so having a logo that smiles seemed to be the perfect fit for my personal website.
I decided to make it subtle and only show when someone rolls over the logo, in the hope that someone will see it by surprise and that it causes them to smile as well.
I like it! My website logo has a smile rollover effect too!!
